Standard bike conversion to electric
Costa Rica’s green credentials already put the Central American nation near the top of the list when it comes to battling climate change, but if their newly elected President is to be believed, then it’s going to climb higher still. In his inaugural speech, which he turned up to riding a hydrogen-fueled bus, Carlos Alvarado Quesada announced that he wants to lead Costa Rica to become the first decarbonized country in the world. This will include scrapping the use of all fossil fuels – even those used for transport. “Decarbonization is the great task of our generation and Costa Rica must be one of the first countries in the world to accomplish it, if not the first,” President Alvarado told the crowd. “We have the titanic and beautiful task of abolishing the use of fossil fuels in our economy to make way for the use of clean and renewable energies.”
Increasing adoption of electric vehicles around the world has in recent years been expanding rapidly. As of the end of 2016: Cumulative global sales of highway legal plug-in electric passenger cars and light utility vehicles achieved the 2 million unit milestone in December 2016, of which, 38% were sold in 2016.. The 1 million milestone had only been reached in September 2016. Global sales of the light-duty plug-in vehicle segment achieved a 0.86% market share of total new car sales, up from 0.62% in 2015 and 0.38% in 2014.
The global ratio between all-electric cars (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) was 61:39, up from 59:41 at the end of 2015. Cumulative sales of plug-in hybrids totaled almost 800,000 units. Despite their rapid growth, plug-in electric cars represented only 0.15% of the 1.4 billion motor vehicles on the world's roads, up from 0.1% in 2015.
